Overseas Investments

The insurance sector is kicking off September with a major transaction. According to Reuters, Aon has agreed to acquire the U.S. brokerage firm USI Insurance Services from the investment group KKR for $17 billion in cash. USI has annual revenues of around $3 billion and a significant position among medium-sized American companies. With this acquisition, Aon is further expanding its U.S. business following the acquisition of NFP in 2024. KKR expects to receive approximately six times its original investment from the sale.

The U.S. pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly continues to acquire biotechnology companies. According to The Wall Street Journal, it will acquire the private company Merida Biosciences for up to $2.875 billion in cash. Merida is developing targeted therapies for serious autoimmune and allergic diseases, including Graves' disease. This acquisition represents another step for Lilly to expand its portfolio beyond its highly successful obesity and diabetes drugs.

South Korean company Samsung Biologics announced on August 31 a tender offer for the Swiss company PolyPeptide Group. It is offering shareholders CHF 44.31 per share, which represents a total valuation of approximately CHF 1.46 billion. PolyPeptide manufactures peptide active ingredients used in the pharmaceutical industry. With this acquisition, Samsung is expanding its manufacturing network in Europe, the U.S., and India, and acquiring capacity for the rapidly growing segment of peptide drugs.

The energy group ePointZero from Abu Dhabi has agreed to acquire a 90 percent stake in the African company Azura Power Holdings. The sellers are investors Actis and Africa50, while the founding company, Amaya Capital, will retain a ten percent stake. The price was not disclosed. Azura operates power plants with a capacity of 752 MW in Nigeria, Senegal, and Mozambique, and is preparing approximately 1.5 GW of additional projects.

The Swedish investment company EQT has also completed the acquisition of Coller Capital. The initial purchase price is $3.2 billion, with an additional up to $500 million potentially following based on future results. The combination creates Coller EQT, and the total assets managed by the EQT group will increase to €341 billion.

Significant Events with Global Impact

France is introducing a financial penalty on so-called "ultra-fast fashion" products starting September 1. According to the French government, the measure primarily targets platforms such as Shein, Temu, and other retailers with an extremely wide and rapidly changing product range. This year, the sanction could reach €12 per item, but no more than half the price excluding tax. By 2030, the cap is expected to increase to €19.50. France is the first country to introduce such a system on this scale.

Energy markets have once again been impacted by the escalation of conflict between the United States and Iran. According to Euronews, the European benchmark TTF contract rose to €70.85 per MWh on Monday. The main concern is the limited export of LNG from the Persian Gulf. Approximately one-fifth of global trade in liquefied natural gas normally flows through the Strait of Hormuz, and Europe's storage capacity is currently only about two-thirds full.

A more positive signal came from Asian industry. According to Reuters, China's manufacturing PMI for RatingDog increased to 51.5 points in August, up from 50.9 points in July. Production was particularly supported by demand for technology, semiconductors, and equipment for artificial intelligence. Similar improvements were also seen in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
