The government of Ghana has announced a 62.58 percent increase in the purchase price of cocoa beans for the 2025/2026 agricultural season, effective from 7 August 2025. According to Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, as reported by Russia's TASS news agency, the price per tonne of cocoa will increase from $3,100 (USD, approximately 71,300 CZK) to $5,040 ( 115,920 CZK).
This amount is equivalent to 70 per cent of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value, the price of the goods ready for export on board the ship, which is US$7,200 per tonne (C$165,600), the Ghana Web news portal reported.
The price is based on contracts for 100,000 tonnes of cocoa sold at US$2,600 a tonne (about C$59,800) in the 2023/2024 season and forecasts for the coming season, Channels Television said. In the local currency, the Ghana cedi (GHS), at an exchange rate of GHS 10.25 to US$1, the price will rise from GHS 49,600 to GHS 51,660 per tonne, or GHS 3228.75 for a standard 64kg bag, Akelicious confirmed.
Ghana, the world's second-largest cocoa producer after Côte d'Ivoire, is facing cocoa smuggling and the effects of climate change that are limiting production. Higher prices are intended to encourage farmers not to sell land for illegal gold mining, which is damaging the environment, Asaase Radio reported.
The government is also renewing the free fertilizer programme and introducing scholarships for children of cocoa farmers from the 2026/2027 school year.
The price increase may affect the global market as Ghana often sets prices ahead of Côte d'Ivoire, where the price is now US$3 900 per tonne (approximately CZK 89 700). Production is expected to reach 650 000 tonnes.
