UN, 19 October. BRICS can become an alternative to international financial institutions, said the country's permanent representative to the UN, Ernesto Soberon Guzman.
"BRICS plays an important role in the international economic order and provides a balance when it comes to big powers that do not always work in the interests of developing countries. BRICS countries have common interests and huge foreign trade opportunities," he said.
BRICS "can become an alternative to international financial institutes such as the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund because its members include some of the world's largest economies," Guzman noted.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry said in October that Cuban authorities had submitted an official request for inclusion as a BRICS partner country in a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The BRICS group was formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. As of 1 January 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia became full members. This year, the Russian Federation chairs the association and more than 200 different events are planned. The main event of the association during the Russian presidency will be the BRICS Summit in Kazan.
