The United States will postpone the increase in tariffs on Chinese semiconductor imports until June 2027. This decision was announced after a year-long investigation under „Section 301“, which began on 23 December 2024.
According to a record published by the US Trade Representative (USTR) on 23 December 2025, zero tariffs will be applied to semiconductor imports from China for the next 18 months, and future rates will be set at least 30 days in advance.
The report describes Chinese practices and policies in the semiconductor industry as „unfair.“ Nevertheless, the USTR has decided not to take immediate action to impose tariffs.
This move is widely seen as an effort to maintain the trade truce between the two countries. According to CNBC „The decision to postpone new tariffs for at least 18 months signals that the Trump administration is seeking to ease trade tensions between the US and China.“.
While the new tariffs have been postponed, the 50% tariff on Chinese semiconductors introduced by the Biden administration on 1 January 2025 remains in force.
