British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's official visit to China produced a number of concrete results as the two countries agreed to develop a long-term and consistent comprehensive strategic partnership.
China has decided to cut import tariffs on whisky from 10 per cent to 5 per cent and is considering granting unilateral visa-free entry to British citizens. The two countries also agreed to establish a high-level partnership to tackle climate change, resumed a security dialogue and signed 12 intergovernmental cooperation documents.
Starmer, the first British prime minister to visit China in eight years, is on a four-day trip that ends on January 31. The following is a full list of achievements made by China and the UK during the visit:
1. Both parties are committed to developing a long-term and consistent comprehensive strategic partnership.
2. The two sides agreed to establish a high-level partnership on climate and nature.
3. The two sides have resumed a high-level security dialogue.
4. They will hold a new round of strategic dialogues, economic and financial dialogues and a meeting of the Joint Trade and Economic Commission this year.
5. The two sides have agreed in principle to resume normal exchanges between their legislatures. China welcomes members of the British Parliament to visit more frequently and to better understand the real China.
6. A meeting of the China-Britain Business Council is held, at which the two sides agree to further strengthen bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
7. Both sides welcomed the establishment of the China-Britain Financial Working Group and its inaugural meeting. They also welcomed the London Branch of the Bank of China becoming the second RMB settlement bank in the UK, and agreed to jointly host the Sino-British Insurance Forum.
8. China is actively considering granting unilateral visa-free entry to British citizens.
9. China will reduce the import duty rate on whisky from 10 percent to 5 percent.
10. The leaders of the two countries witnessed the signing of 12 documents on inter-governmental cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, agriculture and food, culture, market regulation and law enforcement cooperation.
11. The two sides also reached several agreements on cooperation in areas such as finance, health, media and education.
