China has called on member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to strengthen cooperation in enhancing food security. According to Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong, Beijing is ready to work with all APEC members to create a more stable and resilient food supply system.
Liu, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, made this call at the opening of the 11th APEC Ministerial Meeting on Food Security. The meeting is being held in Hangzhou, the capital of eastern China's Zhejiang province.
In his speech, Liu emphasized that APEC can play an important role in protecting global food security, which has faced increasing pressure in recent years. These pressures are related to geopolitical tensions, commodity price fluctuations, climate change, and disruptions to supply chains.
The Chinese Vice Premier urged individual APEC economies to make greater use of their own resources in ensuring food security, while also strengthening mutual cooperation. The goal is to create a stronger foundation for long-term stability in food production and supply throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Food security is one of the topics that is gaining increasing importance within APEC. The region includes some of the world's largest producers, exporters, and importers of agricultural products, and its stability affects not only local markets but also global prices and the availability of food.
China has long emphasized the need to strengthen domestic agricultural production, modernize agriculture, and simultaneously develop international cooperation. Liu Guozhong now called on other APEC economies to adopt a similar approach and work together to find ways to increase the resilience of food systems to future crises.
The meeting in Hangzhou is therefore another opportunity to deepen regional cooperation in the areas of agriculture, food trade, and long-term supply security.
