China strongly condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran and called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to a diplomatic solution. At the UN, there were warnings of an irreversible escalation that could engulf the entire Middle East.
Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations addresses an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York Fu Cong with an urgent appeal: to stop the fighting, protect civilians and resume peace talks. He said Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities violate international law and set a "dangerous precedent".
"The situation is threatening to spiral out of control. Israel must cease fire immediately," Fu said. At the same time, he warned that continued aggression not only threatens Iran but could destabilise the entire region. He particularly stressed the need to protect civilians and prevent "senseless bloodshed".
Fu praised the talks between the Iranian foreign minister and his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as the joint statement by 21 Arab and Islamic countries demanding a ceasefire and a return to talks on Iran's nuclear programme.
According to the Chinese diplomat, the international community, especially the powers with a strong influence on the conflict, must act responsibly and not escalate tensions. China supports an active role for the Security Council and is ready to play a constructive role in restoring peace in the Middle East.
