Every year on the third Saturday in October, archaeological organizations around the world offer a professional program and activities for the public. Archaeological sites in the Czech Republic regularly take part in this event by organising guided tours in the field, creative workshops and programmes in museums and research institutions. The purpose of the International Day of Archaeology is to bring the field closer to people who do not normally encounter it and to show that archaeology is literally all around us, pointed out the server Kudy z boredy.
This year's edition falls on Saturday 18 October 2025 and programmes across the Czech Republic promise a truly varied day. According to the portal Metro.cz National Museum in Prague will offer an afternoon event called "Experience prehistory for yourself". Visitors will be able to try their hand at crushing grain on a grain crusher, weaving or working with replicas of archaeological finds. In addition, experts from the museum will present current research results and answer questions from the public.
Ve Central Bohemia Museum in Roztoky near Prague se podle Kudy z nudy will hold a day-long program "Rituals and Ornaments of the Ancient Slavs". From the morning there will be demonstrations of jewellery making, amulets and baking pancakes on the fire. The programme will also include a family cipher game and an expert lecture on funeral customs of the early Middle Ages.
In western Bohemia, according to information of the West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen, visitors can see an exhibition dedicated to the archaeology of everyday life. As part of the accompanying programme, they can try grinding grain on stone mills, take a look into the kitchens of our ancestors and see authentic finds from the surroundings of Pilsen.
In the east of the country, they will also be involved The Museum of East Bohemia in Pardubice and the National Heritage Institute. Guided tours of archaeological excavations, demonstrations of metal detector work and textile workshops will take place at the Pardubice Castle. The programme will be complemented by performances of groups demonstrating life in prehistoric and medieval times.
Podle Kudy z nudy a Metro.cz most of the events are free of charge or for a regular admission fee. For some activities, advance booking is required. It is recommended to check the websites of the respective institutions for current times and programme details.
International Archaeology Day is a great opportunity to explore the past. Not only do we look beneath the surface of history, but we are reminded that the traces of our ancestors live on in the everyday environment around us.
