Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for discoveries in machine learning

STOCKHOLM, 8 October - American physicist John Hopfield and Canadian computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for "fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning using artificial neural networks", the Nobel Committee of the Karolinska Institute announced on Tuesday.

While 91-year-old Hopfield created a structure that can store and reconstruct information, 76-year-old Hinton invented a method, "which can independently discover features in data and which has become important for the large artificial neural networks that are now being used," vysvětlil výbor.
