In the Czech Republic, there is a lively debate about the visit of SPD Chairman Tom Okamura to the People's Republic of China, and whether to adhere to the value-based politics advocated by the previous government, or to embrace pragmatism, as promoted by the current government.
According to Jiří Gaudin, a city councilor from Mladá Boleslav and the leading SPD candidate for the 2026 elections, while value-based politics is a good thing, it is not entirely pragmatic.
"The moment we close off access to the Chinese market in some way, our competitors will supply goods there. And it doesn't matter whether it's Germany, Great Britain, or anyone else," Gaudin said, adding that for this reason, China should not be neglected.
