China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong warned on Thursday that any military involvement by Japan in the Taiwan issue would face a „direct hit“.
Fu made the statement during the plenary session of this year's Special Committee on the UN Charter and the Strengthening of the Role of the United Nations.
In his view, Japanese political leaders have been acting against historical developments in recent years. Japan, he said, has explicitly linked the Taiwan issue to the so-called „survival-threatening situation,“ responded speculatively on the basis of the Japan-U.S. alliance, and is trying to use the concept of „self-defense“ as a pretext to intervene in the issue.
„These erroneous arguments have no legal basis,“ Fu said. He stressed that Taiwan is an integral part of China's territory and the way to resolve the Taiwan issue is an internal matter of China. „No other country has the right to intervene, let alone use force under the pretext of so-called self-defence,“ He added.
Fu further stated that such claims, in his view, are contrary to Japan's obligations as a defeated country and violate the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation and the Japanese Act of Surrender, as well as the principles of the UN Charter regarding respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
„These allegations constitute a serious challenge to the post-war international order and should be met with vigilance and opposition by all peace-loving countries. If Japan, under any pretext, exercises the so-called right of collective self-defence and intervenes in the Taiwan issue, it will constitute aggression against China and China will strike a direct blow,“ Fu said.
On February 14, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reminded the Munich Security Conference that Japan had in the past used the „existential crisis situation“ as a pretext to invade China as well as to attack Pearl Harbor in the United States in 1941.
„If Japan gambles again, it will only face a quicker defeat and even more disastrous losses,“ Wang warned during the conference.
