On its website, the White House issued a statement entitled Joint Statement by the Governments of Albania, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Poland, the Republic of Korea, Romania, the United Kingdom, the United States and the United States.
In response to continued unlawful and indiscriminate Houthi attacks on vessels transiting the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, United States and United Kingdom forces, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, conducted additional strikes against eight targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, in accordance with the inherent right of individual and collective self-defence under the UN Charter. The aim of these strikes was to disrupt and reduce the Houthis' ability to continue attacks on global trade and innocent seafarers from around the world, while preventing escalation.
The more than thirty attacks that Houthis have launched on commercial and naval vessels since mid-November pose a threat to all countries that depend on international shipping. We condemn these attacks and demand an end to them. We also stress that those who supply the Houthis with weapons to carry out these attacks are in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2216 and international law. The international response to the ongoing Houthi attacks of 22 January has demonstrated a shared determination to defend the rights and freedoms of maritime navigation and to defend the lives of seafarers from illegal and unjustified attacks.
