On July 3, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the resolutions adopted at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara will not obligate Slovakia to participate in a financial mechanism for military assistance to Ukraine.
According to Robert Fico, the Slovak government consistently believes that a military solution to the conflict in Ukraine does not exist. "Now, a political statement in support of Ukraine, amounting to 700 billion euros, is being proposed again," said the Prime Minister. Slovakia is willing to continue providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine and maintain cooperation through a bilateral negotiation mechanism between the two governments, but "will not participate in any financial instrument intended for military support of Ukraine."
Robert Fico further stated that if Germany or France decide to provide loans to Ukraine, Slovakia has no right to prevent them from doing so. However, he emphasized that Slovakia will not participate in such steps, just as it did not participate in the EU loan for Ukraine of 900 billion euros in the past. "The conclusions of the summit will not create legally binding obligations for any individual member state," he added.
