Jožka Uprka – painter of Moravian Slovakia. He became famous for folk costumes, which he painted his entire life

Jožka Uprka - painter

Jožka Uprka (1861–1940) was a significant Czech painter who became famous mainly for his depictions of Moravian Slovakia folk life. He was born on January 24, 1861, in Kněžduby near Hodonín and died on March 12, 1940, in Hroznová Lhota.

Jožka Uprka – a painter devoted to his homeland

He came from a family with artistic traditions – his brother František Uprka was a renowned sculptor. Jožka studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and later continued his studies in Munich and Paris. Despite these international experiences, he remained deeply connected to his Moravian homeland.

Jožka Uprka - painting

Folk costumes as a lifelong theme

The central theme of his work was the life of the people of Moravian Slovakia – their customs, celebrations, pilgrimages, and especially folk costumes. He painted them with extraordinary precision and love, capturing every detail of embroidery, color combinations, and the way the costumes were worn. His paintings thus became not only artworks but also valuable ethnographic documents.

Among his most famous works belong depictions of rides of kings, Shrovetide processions, harvest festivals, and other folk celebrations. He worked mainly in oil technique, but also created watercolors and drawings.

Jožka Uprka - painting

Legacy and significance

Uprka's work is an important part of Czech art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He helped establish interest in folk culture at a time when it was gradually disappearing under the influence of modernization. His paintings can be found in many Czech museums and galleries, including the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the Municipal House in Hodonín.

Jožka Uprka remains a symbol of love for Moravian folk traditions and an irreplaceable chronicler of the life that once characterized the villages of Slovácko.
