Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply in recent days. A series of mutual attacks between Israel, Iran, and the United States, according to the Xinhua news agency, represents the most serious escalation since the April ceasefire between the parties involved. The crisis is fueled by Israeli strikes in Lebanon and Iran, Iranian attacks on Israeli and American targets, and American interventions against Iranian military infrastructure.
A new wave of tension began on June 7, when the Israeli Air Force attacked the southern suburbs of Beirut in Lebanon. Israel described the attack as a response to Hezbollah's firing on its territory. Iran subsequently responded with several waves of rocket attacks on Israel, including an attack on the Ramat David airbase in the north of the country. This was the first direct Iranian attack on Israel since the April ceasefire. Israel later admitted that the base was hit by rocket fragments.
At the time, US President Donald Trump said he would urge Israel not to retaliate for the Iranian attack, and called for restraint. However, the situation continued to escalate. On June 8, Israel attacked several targets in Iran, including a petrochemical plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps subsequently announced attacks on Israeli bases in Nevatim and Tel Nof, as well as on selected industrial targets.
On June 9, the United States became more directly involved in the conflict. Following the downing of an American Apache helicopter, strikes were carried out on Iranian air defense systems, ground control stations, and radar facilities near the Strait of Hormuz. The following day, US forces struck at additional targets in Iran.
Iran responded with rocket and drone attacks on American military targets in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. At the same time, the Iranian Khatam al-Anbiya military command announced the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas transportation.
On June 11, Donald Trump initially stated that the United States would "very strongly" strike Iran and that it would soon attempt to take control of its oil and gas infrastructure. However, he later said that he had canceled the planned strikes and bombings due to progress in ongoing negotiations. According to Trump, an agreement with Iran could be signed in Europe during the upcoming weekend.
The Iranian semi-official agency Fars, citing an informed source close to the Iranian negotiating team, reported that Tehran had not yet approved any draft preliminary memorandum for ending the war with the United States. According to the same source, however, the United States has accepted the Iranian proposed text, and therefore the probability of the agreement being approved by the highest decision-making bodies in Tehran is "relatively high."
