The European Parliament in Strasbourg has approved legislation related to the trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. The decision was made on June 16th in a final vote by the plenary session. According to the standard procedure, the text will now go to the Council of the European Union, which must formally approve it.
Representatives of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union reached an agreement on the proposal on May 20th. The new rules provide for the introduction of tariff benefits for selected American products imported into the European market. At the same time, protective mechanisms are to be strengthened to protect the interests of the European Union and its member states.
The agreement comes at a time of tension in trade relations between Brussels and Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously warned that if the European Union does not fulfill its obligations under the agreement by July 4th, the United States will significantly increase tariffs on goods imported from the EU.
The approved legislation is not only a technical step, but also an important signal to the United States. The European Union is trying to show that it is ready to fulfill its agreed commitments, while also retaining the tools to protect its own economic interests.
