The 2026 FIFA World Cup began with a lively start in Group A. The host nation, Mexico, successfully navigated their opening match of the tournament, defeating South Africa 2:0 at the iconic Azteca Stadium. The Czech Republic, on the other hand, entered the tournament with a 1:2 defeat against South Korea, despite taking the lead with a goal from Ladislav Krejčí.
The Mexicans proved that they would be very strong on home soil. Against South Africa, they entered the match actively, and in the early stages, Julián Quiñones capitalized on a defensive error by the opponent, scoring the first goal of the entire championship. The home team then controlled the game, although the final reassurance came only after halftime. In the 67th minute, the experienced Raúl Jiménez headed in to extend the lead to 2:0.
However, the match was not just about Mexican dominance. It was also marked by toughness and disciplinary actions. South Africa finished the game with nine players after the dismissals of Sphephela Sithole and Themba Zwane, and in added time, Mexican player César Montes also received a red card. Nevertheless, Mexico entered the tournament convincingly and made it clear that they want to advance from the group without complications.
The Czechs had a good start against South Korea and initially appeared well-organized. In the 59th minute, Ladislav Krejčí capitalized on a long throw-in, using his aerial strength to head the Czech team into the lead. However, the lead did not last long. The Koreans responded in the 67th minute with a goal from Hwang In-beom, and in the 80th minute, substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu completed the turnaround.
The Czech team may regret the ending of the match. In added time, Michal Sadílek came close to equalizing, but his close-range shot was saved by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. While South Korea showed speed, technical quality, and better spatial awareness, the Czechs relied mainly on physical play, set pieces, and aerial duels. However, this was not enough to earn them any points.
After the first round, Mexico is in an ideal position, South Korea has valuable three points, and the Czech Republic must quickly step up their game. The next match against South Africa could be crucial for the Czech Republic's ambitions in Group A.
