Ukraine has received another limited supply of missiles for the American Patriot air defense systems, and at the same time secured additional air defense assets from foreign partners. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that current supplies are far from sufficient to meet the needs of a country preparing for another period of intense Russian missile and drone attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday that a new shipment of missiles intended for Patriot systems had arrived in the country. He did not disclose the exact number or the state involved in the delivery.
"A small batch of Patriot missiles has arrived. I cannot say exactly how many, but there are few. We need more," Zelenskyy said according to the Ukrainian agency UNIAN. At the same time, Kyiv received confirmation regarding several French Crotale air defense systems and missiles for them. According to the president, Ukraine also received AIM missiles.
Kyiv is seeking hundreds more Patriot missiles
The difference between current supplies and the requirements of the Ukrainian army remains significant. Zelenskyy previously stated that Ukraine wants to acquire approximately 300 Patriot missiles to ensure air defense during the upcoming winter. According to him, the requirement of the Ukrainian Air Force is even higher and amounts to around 360 missiles.
The shortage of interceptors is becoming increasingly important in the context of ongoing Russian attacks with ballistic and guided missiles. The Patriot system is currently the most important asset in Ukraine's arsenal, capable of engaging fast-moving ballistic missiles. Reuters reported last week that Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked allies for more missiles due to their limited Ukrainian stockpiles.
French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, promised to accelerate the delivery of additional equipment and missiles for Ukrainian air defense. According to Reuters, Paris is also ready to negotiate with countries that have American Patriot interceptors in their arsenals. At the same time, France supports the supply of SAMP/T systems and the future production of some missiles directly in Ukraine.
Germany is still looking for additional sources
Germany is also trying to secure additional supplies of Patriots among its allies. However, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on August 25 that Berlin has not yet received any concrete commitments from partner countries to provide more missiles. Germany intends to continue negotiations.
Ukrainian air defense is therefore increasingly in the focus of attention of Western allies. While Kyiv argues for the need to protect cities, energy infrastructure, and the population from Russian attacks, Moscow has long claimed that Western military aid prolongs the conflict and will not fundamentally change the situation on the battlefield.
