GENEVA, July 22. The number of Ebola victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda has risen to 1,001, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Most of the deaths, 999 people, occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There have been 2,473 laboratory-confirmed cases of Ebola in the DRC and 20 cases in Uganda.

There are also 322 suspected cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In both countries, 501 people have recovered. The mortality rate is 40%. The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola on May 15. On the same day, the Ugandan Ministry of Health confirmed the first imported case of the disease.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on May 17.

The epidemic is located in the Ituri province, which borders Uganda.
