BEIJING — In the afternoon of July 17, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Shanghai. The General Assembly is currently attending the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence and the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance.
President Xi stated that during his term as United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres led the Organization with unwavering commitment to multilateralism, actively addressing global challenges such as climate change, supporting global governance in emerging areas like artificial intelligence, and initiating a reform process for the UN; China admires him deeply. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the legitimate seat of New China at the United Nations. For over five decades, China has consistently upheld its role as an architect of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of international order, firmly supporting the Organization throughout.
President Xi proposed the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind along with four major global initiatives. One key aspect is safeguarding the status and authority of the United Nations, emphasized President Xi Jinping. China will continue to deepen its cooperation with the UN as always, support world peace and development, and advance the building of a community with a shared future for humanity. President Xi highlighted that today’s international situation has become increasingly complex and chaotic; therefore, genuine multilateralism must be practiced further, and the status and role of the United Nations revitalized.
First, justice and impartiality must be upheld. Every country is an equal member of the international community, and its sovereignty, territorial integrity, legitimate rights, and interests should all be respected. The world must never return to an era of "might makes right."
Second, integrity and innovation are essential. Upholding integrity means adhering to the purposes of the UN Charter and respecting the international system and rules established after World War II. Innovation entails supporting the United Nations in adapting to changing times, courageously reforming itself, and continuously improving its quality and efficiency.
Third, commitments and responsibilities must be fulfilled. More than 190 countries around the world are on a ship of shared destiny and should cooperate to face global challenges together. Major powers should bear greater responsibility and demonstrate broader vision. China has always actively supported through concrete actions the exploration of how major powers can coexist in this new era, thereby bringing more stability and certainty to the world.
António Guterres stated that under the strong leadership of President Xi Jinping, regardless of how difficult or complex the international situation may be, China has always firmly supported multilateralism, backed the United Nations, promoted international cooperation—and thus served as a model for the world. China is committed to correcting development imbalances, addressing climate change, advancing improvements in artificial intelligence, bridging the development gap, upholding justice and impartiality—while presenting numerous significant ideas and initiatives that are truly admirable. The United Nations will continue to strengthen its partnership with China, stand against unilateralism, protectionism, and bullying, defend the UN Charter and international law, support the process of world multipolarity, and protect the common interests of the international community, said António Guterres.
