The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, arrived in Shanghai on Thursday morning, July 16th. He is now scheduled for a working meeting before the opening of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2026 and the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance.

Both events will take place in Shanghai from July 17th to 20th and will focus on the development of artificial intelligence, its safe use, and rules for its governance at the international level.

António Guterres has long called for strengthened global cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. He emphasizes the need for common rules that would help harness the benefits of new technologies while simultaneously mitigating their potential risks.

In recent years, the UN has established two mechanisms focused on this area: the Global Dialogue on AI Governance and the International Scientific Group for Artificial Intelligence. Both platforms aim to promote communication between countries, foster consensus-building, and expand international cooperation.
