The Faculty of Thomayer Hospital in Prague has launched one of the largest investments in its modern history. The Czech Prime Minister, Andrej Babiš, and the Minister of Health, Adam Vojtěch, ceremoniously inaugurated the construction of a new central emergency reception on Wednesday, August 19th. This project, costing 2.2 billion crowns, is intended to fundamentally change the way acute medical care is provided in the hospital and to speed up diagnosis and treatment for patients.
In addition to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health, the Director of the Faculty of Thomayer Hospital, Zdeněk Beneš, also attended the symbolic start of construction. The new pavilion is one of the state's strategic investment projects in the field of healthcare.
The main goal of the project is to concentrate key acute care services in one place and significantly reduce the time it currently takes to transfer patients between different departments. The new layout should enable faster follow-up examinations, diagnostics, surgeries, and subsequent intensive care.
The new pavilion will include examination rooms, trauma clinics, imaging centers including CT and MRI, a modern operating suite with three operating rooms, intensive care units, and an acute inpatient ward.
According to Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the construction represents another important step in the long-term modernization of Thomayer Hospital.
"The new central emergency reception is another important step in transforming Thomayer Hospital into a modern healthcare facility of the 21st century," said the Prime Minister. He emphasized that concentrating key parts of acute care in one building will enable faster and more efficient treatment for patients.
According to him, the new facility will improve access to emergency care for nearly 600,000 residents of Prague 4, the surrounding area, and adjacent areas of the Central Bohemian Region.
Babiš also described the modernization of healthcare as one of the government's priorities. He also recalled another major healthcare investment – the National Oncology Center in Motol, which is scheduled to open on September 9th.
The Minister of Health, Adam Vojtěch, described the start of construction as the result of several years of preparation. According to him, a modern central emergency reception has long been lacking at Thomayer Hospital, despite the fact that the facility provides acute care for a large catchment area.
According to the minister, the new pavilion will not only speed up diagnosis and treatment but also create better working conditions for medical staff.
"We support exactly these kinds of projects – investments that have a clear and long-term benefit for patients and the entire healthcare system," said Vojtěch.
The construction of the central emergency reception is part of a broader modernization of the Faculty of Thomayer Hospital. Upon completion, the new pavilion is intended to significantly change the organization of acute care and bring together services that are currently divided among several parts of the hospital complex.
