April 8 - China unveils a train faster than a plane. Top speed up to 1,000 km per hour
China has begun construction of a revolutionary maglev train that can reach speeds of 1,000 km/h - outperforming even transport planes. Powered by superconducting magnetic levitation, the train will "hover" in a zero-contact tunnel, minimising friction and maximising speed. (More here)
9 April - The International Trade Committee on Tuesday adopted revised rules for screening foreign investment in the EU
BRUSSELS - Under the new rules, Member States will be obliged to screen more sectors, such as media services, critical raw materials and transport infrastructure, to identify and address security or public order risks related to foreign investment. (More here)
April 10 - US President Donald Trump immediately temporarily reduces tariffs on most countries, while increasing them on China
WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump has announced, effective immediately, tariff cuts on imports from most countries. The new measure imposes a temporary duty of ten percent for 90 days. The exception to this decision is China, on whose goods tariffs have been increased from 104 to 125 percent. (More here)
April 10 - Slovak Parliament approves compensation for fines from the Covid-19 era
BRATISLAVA - The Slovak parliament today approved a law to compensate people who were fined for not complying with epidemic restrictions during the covid-19 pandemic or paid for meals in quarantine facilities during that period. Prime Minister Robert Fico's cabinet estimated the cost of the compensation at more than three million euros (over 75 million crowns). (More here)
10 April - Unified entrance exams for secondary schools in the Czech Republic have started and pupils' interest has increased again
PRAGUE - On Friday, 11 April, uniform entrance examinations for four-year secondary school courses began. According to the Ministry of Education, some 98,130 pupils registered for the exams this year, which is about 4,000 more than last year. The first exam date fell today, while the second will take place on Monday 14 April. The exams take the form of tests in Czech language and mathematics and the results will play a key role in admission to secondary school. (More here)
