Clove essential oil has very strong antiseptic properties. It acts against viruses, bacteria, mites and worms. It strengthens immunity and relieves cramps. For these reasons, it is suitable for various respiratory and digestive problems.
Traditionally, its relatively strong analgesic effects are used for toothache, but it can also be applied for joint and spinal pain and neuralgia. It increases blood pressure and improves blood circulation. Eugenol, a specific component of clove essential oil, is an antidote to inflammatory mediators. Among other things, it counteracts the contraction of smooth muscle (antispasmodic effect). This ability most likely contributes to the sedative and analgesic effects of eugenol.
Clove essential oil is widely used in the treatment of acne-prone skin. One of the bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) that contributes to the development of acne actually „hates“ clove essential oil. It has proven effective against skin parasites, especially scabies, and also in the treatment of purulent wounds and ulcers. It is also used as an ingredient in mouthwashes.

Effects on the psyche
Clove essential oil is very effective on a psychological level. It contains high amounts of eugenol, which promotes the production of noradrenaline. This neurotransmitter works similarly to adrenaline. This means that clove acts as a powerful stimulant on the nervous system. It can be used in cases of weakness, exhaustion, frustration, resignation, and unwillingness to deal with things. It also provides a feeling of certainty, stability and security. It brings a feeling of warmth and cordiality, whether to our inner space or to our relationships.
Massages and baths
High dilution must be observed. We use it for local massage of the chest or abdomen for respiratory or digestive problems, the back or large joints for rheumatic pain, the temple area for migraines, and general massage for strong stimulation.
It combines well with citrus fruits and most flowers, but also with laurel, sage, lemongrass and sandalwood. For migraines, massage the temples with clove, lavender and cajeput. For gum inflammation, use a combination with laurel, thyme and tea tree. For tired and sore muscles after sports, a massage mixture with black pepper and ginger is effective.
Clove essential oil is obtained from the tropical tree Syzygium aromaticum (Eugenia aromatica, Eugenia caryophyllata) from the fruit or dried flower buds, which we know as a spice. The essential oil from the fruit and buds is very strong and requires caution when dosing. It is best left to more experienced aromatherapists. The essential oil from the leaves has a milder effect. Nevertheless, all types are very strong stimulants of the nervous system due to their high eugenol content. This phenol strongly promotes the production of noradrenaline, which acts in the same way as adrenaline. In addition, cloves have strong antiseptic and analgesic effects. Traditionally, the oil or spice itself is used for toothache.
The clove tree is a tropical tree 10 to 20 metres tall. It has a short, thick trunk and a typical conical crown. The leaves are evergreen, oblong-ovate, up to 10 cm long. The flowers are red and form inflorescences similar to those of myrtle, with which it belongs to the Myrtaceae family. The flowers produce purple, egg-shaped fruits about 2 cm long. The well-known spice is obtained from the flower buds, which are left to dry.
Clove trees used to grow wild on the northern Moluccan islands. When the Dutch colonised these islands in the 17th century, almost all clove trees were burned and destroyed, with the exception of those on the island of Amboine. Under penalty of death, it was forbidden to export seeds or seedlings of these trees. In this way, the Dutch wanted to maintain their monopoly on the import of cloves to Europe and also to greatly increase their price. Today, there are few wild trees left, but plantations where these trees are grown now exist all over the world wherever there is sufficient heat and humidity.
