TOKYO, 7 September. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced his decision to resign from office, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported on Sunday.
According to the NHK, Ishiba made the decision to avoid a split in his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The results of a poll of all incumbent LDP MPs and representatives of regional party organisations on the issue of holding an early election for party chairman are expected to be released on Monday.
The LDP, led by Ishibova, failed in the summer parliamentary elections in July and did not win a majority in both houses of parliament. This led to numerous calls within Ishib's party for her to resign as the country's prime minister.
