BEIJING - On the morning of 24 July, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with European Council President Costa and European Commission President Von der Leyen, who are in China for the 25th China-EU Summit, at the People's Palace.
Xi Jinping said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU and the 80th anniversary of the UN. China-EU relations are once again at a key historical milestone. Over the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, exchanges and cooperation between China and the EU have yielded rich results that have benefited both sides and the world.
Important experiences and lessons from this collaboration are about mutual respect, finding common ground while leaving differences, open collaboration and win-win. These are also key principles and guidelines that should guide the future development of China-EU relations. In the face of accelerating changes of centenary proportions and a complex international situation full of turbulence, the leaders of China and the EU must once again demonstrate foresight and responsibility and make the right strategic decisions that meet the expectations of the people and stand the test of time.
Xi Jinping stressed that both China and the EU are constructive forces that promote multilateralism and open cooperation. The more complex the international situation becomes, the more China and the EU need to strengthen communication, increase mutual trust and deepen cooperation so that stable and healthy China-EU relations can provide the world with greater stability and security. Both China and the EU are "big players" in the international community, and we must firmly maintain the right direction of the development of China-EU relations and jointly strive for an even brighter next 50 years of these relations.
