In an interview with China Media Group, UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany stated that the main topic of his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping was people. He emphasized that the purpose of international cooperation is to serve the public and to find ways to better respond to the needs of society.
"People are at the center of our discussions – we are here to serve people," said Khaled El-Enany. According to him, the discussions focused primarily on dialogue between civilizations, cooperation with countries in the Global South, and areas where UNESCO and China can further strengthen joint projects.
El-Enany highlighted the expanded cooperation between China and UNESCO in the field of cultural heritage preservation. He said that this cooperation is of great importance not only for preserving monuments and cultural values, but also for fostering mutual understanding between different civilizations. He described dialogue between cultures as an important tool that can help overcome differences and strengthen respect between nations.
In the interview, he also addressed digital education. He pointed out that modern technologies offer new opportunities, but at the same time, they can exacerbate inequalities between countries with different levels of access to education, infrastructure, and digital tools. Therefore, he said, it is important to reduce global inequalities in education and to ensure that technological development benefits the widest possible range of people.
El-Enany also paid particular attention to artificial intelligence. He emphasized that the world must find ways to bridge the gaps in its development and use. According to him, artificial intelligence should not be the privilege of only some countries or groups, but should be integrated into education to help people and promote a more equitable access to opportunities.
The interview showed that cooperation between China and UNESCO focuses not only on culture and education, but also on broader issues of global development. According to Khaled El-Enany, the focus of these issues remains on the individual, their needs, education, cultural identity, and the opportunity to participate in the future, which is influenced by new technologies.
