WASHINGTON, August 3. The United States and Iran are set to resume talks on August 3, U.S. President Donald Trump said. On Sunday, August 2, speaking to the press aboard Air Force One, Trump stated that the United States decided against a "massive attack" on Iran at the request of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Iran.
"They knew the scope of the attack because they saw it forming. Now we're talking to them in the form of negotiations. It starts tomorrow afternoon and we'll see," Trump said. "We were ready, but when the allies asked for a cancellation, they got us to say: 'Well, we'll see.' And the reason they're asking is that they think there's a deal," the U.S. president remarked.
Trump also stated that a deal had been reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz, with the Iranian nuclear issue to follow. "There is a deal on the Strait of Hormuz and then there will be a deal on nuclear weapons, or you could call it the denuclearization of Iran. I call it the denuclearization of Iran," he added.
The Fars news agency earlier reported, citing a source from the Iranian negotiating team, that there is no agreement on resuming shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and that previous reports circulating about such a deal were false.
Israeli TV Channel 12 earlier on August 2 reported that Trump agreed to cancel a planned powerful strike on Iran after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accepted a compromise proposal from Qatari mediators to restore traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
