Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kuril Islands (known as Northern Territories in Japan) for the first time on August 13th, and inspected a seafood processing plant on Iturup Island (Etorofu in Japanese). What prompted this first visit to the disputed territory between Russia and Japan?

Wang Xinjun, a reporter from CMG (China Media Group), reported that on the same day Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived on the island, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that the Kuril Islands "were, are, and will be Russian territory," and anyone who doesn't understand this faces "terrible consequences."

Alexander Grushko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, also pointed out that Japanese diplomatic protests will not yield any results, and that Russian territory is forever Russian territory.
