Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, called for reform and improvement of the global governance system. He stated that this is a historical task for the current generation, requiring strong commitment and long-term effort.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, emphasized in his main speech that the reform of global governance must focus on strengthening international institutions and their ability to respond to current challenges.
He particularly stressed the need to continue reforming the United Nations to make it more effective, and that the UN Security Council should have greater authority and the ability to fulfill its mission.
"The goal of UN reform is to strengthen the organization, not to weaken it," Wang Yi said. He added that the reform must be led by member states and based on the principles of fairness, openness, and transparency.
Greater representation for developing countries
The Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening the voice of developing countries and small and medium-sized states in the international system.
He paid particular attention to Africa, which he said continues to face historical injustices within the global governance system. The reform process should contribute to a more balanced representation of different regions and states, according to Wang Yi.
In addition to institutional changes, he also called for the modernization of UN peacekeeping operations to meet current conditions and new security challenges.
He also called for greater international consensus on supporting development, on the proper direction of global governance in the area of human rights, and on the ongoing reform of the global economic and financial system.
Rules for artificial intelligence and new technologies
Wang Yi also addressed new technological challenges in his speech.
He called for the creation of international rules for the management and regulation of artificial intelligence, and for strengthening international cooperation in emerging areas such as cyberspace and outer space.
He also said that it is important to promote exchanges between civilizations and strengthen mutual understanding between different cultures.
The Minister described the Group of Friends of Global Governance as an important stabilizing force in the current world and a force supporting justice in a time of international turmoil.
"This mechanism should be further developed and strengthened," he said.
He added that China will continue to uphold multilateralism and contribute to global governance through its own experiences in managing and developing the country.
Five points of agreement on the future of global governance
The meeting was attended by foreign ministers and representatives from more than 60 countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, and Zimbabwe. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, also briefed the participants.
After the meeting, Wang Yi said that the Group of Friends of Global Governance had reached agreement on five key areas.
The first point is to support the democratization of international relations. According to the participants, all states, regardless of size, strength, or economic level, have the right to independently choose their social system and development path, and to participate equally in global governance.
The second point is the consistent adherence to the goals and principles of the UN Charter, the equal application of international law, and the rejection of double standards and coercion.
``````htmlThe third point is to support the central role of the United Nations, strengthen multilateralism and multilateral mechanisms, and reject unilateralism and power politics.
The fourth point is to reform and improve global governance in order to reduce the disparities between the global North and South, and to ensure that all countries benefit from development without exception.
The fifth point emphasizes the need to respond to the most pressing problems of the current world through concrete steps and practical results, so that global governance can meet the needs of the present time and the people of individual countries.
