Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday called on the international community to reject all forms of unilateral actions that bypass the United Nations Security Council. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the voice of developing countries and outlined China's perspective on the qualifications of the next UN Secretary-General.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, spoke at a press conference dedicated to China's proposal to improve the functioning of the UN Security Council. He recalled that the Security Council remains, more than eighty years after its creation, a fundamental pillar of the international system of collective security and bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
At the same time, he acknowledged that in recent years, the Security Council has not always played a sufficiently active role in addressing some major crises.
"If we want to revitalize the United Nations, we must first revitalize the Security Council," said Wang Yi after a high-level meeting dedicated to upholding the goals and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-based international system.
According to him, all member states of the Security Council must consider the preservation of peace as their mission, adhere to the UN Charter, uphold justice, and avoid actions motivated by their own interests or the creation of bloc confrontations.
Strengthening the Voice of Developing Countries
Wang Yi emphasized the importance of reform that would strengthen the representation of developing countries and small and medium-sized states in international institutions. He paid particular attention to Africa, which, according to him, continues to face historical injustices within the current system of global governance.
According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, the international community should jointly reject all unilateral actions that bypass the UN Security Council.
"The international community should jointly reject all forms of unilateral actions that bypass the Security Council, so that unilateral coercion has no room or legitimacy," he said.
Requirements for the Next UN Secretary-General
Wang Yi also spoke about the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. According to him, the new head of the world organization will have a crucial impact on the future of UN reforms and on the practical interests of member states.
China believes that the next Secretary-General should meet several basic criteria. First and foremost, he or she should be deeply committed to the goals and principles of the UN Charter. Furthermore, he or she should possess extensive diplomatic and political experience and strong coordination skills.
According to Wang Yi, the next Secretary-General should also be able to uphold justice in addressing major international issues and pay particular attention to the interests and expectations of developing countries. At the same time, he or she should ensure that UN reform continues in the right direction and leads to increased efficiency of the organization.
"In short: commitment to the UN Charter, exceptional qualifications, integrity and impartiality, as well as the initiative to take responsibility and achieve results," summarized Wang Yi.
He added that China will responsibly approach the process of selecting the next UN Secretary-General, together with other countries.
Recognition of António Guterres' Work
Finally, Wang Yi praised the current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, who has led the organization for nearly ten years.
```According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, Guterres consistently advocated for multilateralism during his tenure, supported the authority of the United Nations, strived to maintain peace, and defended the principles of justice.
"His efforts have been recognized and appreciated by the international community," said Wang Yi.
