At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Donald Trump will visit China from May 13th to 15th for a state visit, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced. Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and a fragile global recovery, the world's attention is focused on whether the two leaders can further stabilize relations between China and the United States and bring greater certainty to the international environment.
Maintaining the Right Course for China-U.S. Relations
For many observers, the main expectation for the summit is the stability of bilateral relations. According to experts interviewed by CGTN, high-level diplomacy has long played a role as a "linchpin" that maintains this stability.
Wu Xinbo, Dean of the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University, stated that contacts at the highest level "set the tone and determine the direction" of relations between the two countries. Similarly, Sun Taiyi, an associate professor at Christopher Newport University, emphasized that direct communication between leaders reduces uncertainty, prevents misunderstandings, and helps maintain stability as a top priority.
In the past year, regular communication has taken place between the two sides, including phone calls and a personal meeting in Busan, South Korea, which helped prevent major misinterpretations and maintain stable relations.
As Xi Jinping stated in Busan: ""In the face of wind, waves, and challenges, we should maintain the right course and ensure a smooth voyage for the giant ship of China-U.S. relations."
This approach, according to the report, has also been reflected in concrete steps – economic negotiations have been ongoing since 2025, and further escalation of tariffs has been suspended. A new round of consultations is scheduled to take place just before the Beijing summit.
There is also increasing people-to-people exchange. Events were held in Beijing to commemorate the 55th anniversary of "ping-pong diplomacy," and more U.S. student groups are visiting China.

Stability as a Factor in Global Development
As the world's two largest economies, China and the United States have a significant impact on global development. Therefore, the results of their negotiations not only affect bilateral relations but also the global economy and international affairs.
According to experts cited by CGTN, better cooperation could support global recovery, stabilize supply chains, and reduce geopolitical tensions.
Prominent economists and analysts point out that stable relations between the two countries reduce the risk of disruptions to global markets, financial volatility, and fragmentation of the international system.
China and the United States are also key technological powers, and their cooperation can bring "win-win" results for global growth and scientific progress, according to experts.
Both Beijing and Washington will host important international summits in 2026 (APEC and G20), which could create opportunities for coordination in areas such as global recovery, energy security, or debt risks.
Xi Jinping has previously emphasized that if both sides proceed based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit, they can find a path to stable and constructive relations. Therefore, the world is watching to see whether the upcoming summit will move the relationship between the two largest global powers towards greater stability, mutual respect, and cooperation. CMG
