CHINA - On the afternoon of July 16, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the Xijiao Hotel in Shanghai. President Tokayev arrived in China to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2026 (WAIC) and the High-Level Conference on Global Artificial Intelligence Governance.
Xi Jinping stated that, despite the complex international situation, relations between China and Kazakhstan remain strong, and their comprehensive strategic partnership continues to develop successfully. He recalled the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and emphasized that its long-term success lies in seeking truth from facts, serving the people, fulfilling its historical mission, adapting to change, and constantly striving for self-improvement. He also praised Kazakhstan's reform efforts and called for closer alignment of the development strategies of both countries and further expansion of practical cooperation.
Xi Jinping emphasized that both sides should promote innovation in trade, develop cross-border e-commerce and services trade, expand cooperation in energy and minerals, accelerate the implementation of key projects, improve transportation links, and increase direct flights. China is ready to share its experience in the digital economy and artificial intelligence and support Kazakhstan's digital transformation. He also called for the successful implementation of the Year of Cultural Exchanges between China and Kazakhstan and for strengthening cooperation in education, science, healthcare, sports, and media.
According to him, both countries should jointly promote the four global initiatives and strengthen coordination within the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the China-Central Asia mechanism in defending international justice. Tokayev said he was pleased to have the opportunity to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. He congratulated the Communist Party of China on its 105th anniversary and praised China's remarkable development achievements under the leadership of President Xi Jinping. He emphasized that relations with China are a top priority for Kazakhstan's foreign policy. Kazakhstan is ready to work with China to implement important agreements to promote bilateral relations, deepen cooperation in trade, investment, transportation, energy, agriculture, and the digital economy, and expand cultural exchanges.
He also expressed support for President Xi's four global initiatives and the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, and affirmed his readiness to work closely with China within the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the China-Central Asia mechanism, the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), and in the area of global artificial intelligence governance. After the meeting, both presidents witnessed the signing and announcement of a number of cooperation agreements in trade, transportation, finance, and media.
