What is the UN Human Rights Award?
The UN Human Rights Award is an honour given to individuals and organisations for outstanding achievements in the field of human rights. The Prize was established by the UN General Assembly in 1966 and was first awarded on 10 December 1968, the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since then, the Prize has been awarded in 1973, 1978, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018.
The award is an opportunity not only to publicly recognize the achievements of the laureates themselves, but also to send a clear signal of support to human rights defenders around the world.
