MOSCOW, February 28. Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian State Duma, has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the situation surrounding the joint Israeli-American attack on Iran.
"The situation undoubtedly requires an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. The international community must prevent a scenario that could lead to the outbreak of a third world war," said the senior Russian lawmaker.
He described the attack as a deliberate act of aggression and an escalation with extremely negative consequences for the wider region. Theories about "preemptive strikes" or the goal of "protecting the American people," following yesterday's discussions on Iran's nuclear program in Geneva, are a "smokescreen" aimed at overthrowing the ruling regime in Tehran, Slutsky noted. According to him, Washington is pursuing a consistent political course in this area, including undermining all processes aimed at reaching an agreement, starting with the JCPOA.
