China has once again called on Japan to reflect on its actions, correct its mistakes, and take thorough measures. This response comes after an incident involving an active-duty officer of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, who, according to available reports, illegally entered the Chinese embassy in Japan with a knife. The Tokyo public prosecutor's office has decided to extend his detention and is continuing the investigation to determine whether he bears criminal responsibility.
The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, at a regular press conference on June 17, stated that, according to China, the incident once again revealed deeply rooted problems in Japan. He mentioned, among other things, the spread of right-wing ideologies and forces, the suppression of objective and rational voices, and the impact, according to Beijing, of the Japanese government's flawed policies on key issues concerning history, Taiwan, and Sino-Japanese relations.
According to Lin Jian, Japan lacks proper historical education, and there are widespread misconceptions about history in Japanese society. He also criticized the direction of Japanese security policy, which, according to China, is moving in an aggressive and expansionist direction. He added that Japan has failed to manage its Self-Defense Forces and that there have been failures in their training and control.
The Chinese side also stated that there have been voices in Japan for some time calling on the government to apologize to China. Others, according to Beijing, are demanding a serious reassessment of the internal management of the Self-Defense Forces, the teaching of history, and the policy towards China, in order to eliminate the causes of such incidents.
"We once again urge Japan to reflect on its actions, correct its mistakes, take thorough corrective measures, and provide China with a responsible explanation," said Lin Jian.
