The United States should work with China to further strengthen consensus, reduce misunderstandings, deepen cooperation, expand dialogue and consultation, and seek more win-win results, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng said Tuesday.
A stable, healthy and sustainable economic and trade relationship between China and the United States not only serves the development goals of both countries, but also contributes to the growth and stability of the global economy, He said.
He said this during a new round of Sino-US economic and trade talks held in Stockholm, Sweden, on Monday and Tuesday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer attended for the US side.
During the meeting, the two sides held open, thorough and constructive discussions on China-US economic and trade relations, macroeconomic policy and other issues of mutual interest.
They also reviewed and confirmed the implementation of the consensus reached during the economic and trade negotiations in Geneva and the framework agreed at the London negotiations.
Based on the consensus reached, the two sides will continue to seek a 90-day extension of the suspension of 24 percent of reciprocal U.S. tariffs and related Chinese retaliatory measures.
According to He Lifeng, the Chinese and US economic and trade teams should be guided by the important consensus reached by the presidents of the two countries in a telephone conversation on 5 June. They should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, respect each other's concerns, further consolidate consensus and deepen mutual trust.
China has taken a consistent stance on economic and trade issues with the United States, according to He. The essence of Sino-US economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.
He stressed that the two sides shared extensive common interests and a wide scope for cooperation in the economic and trade fields. He said cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both.
He called on both sides to continue to respect the important consensus reached during the Presidents' telephone talks and to make full use of the Sino-US economic and trade consultation mechanism.
The US side said that stable economic and trade relations between the US and China are of great importance for both countries' economies and for the global economy.
It also said that it was ready to work with China to resolve differences in the economic and trade field through the consultation mechanism, to promote the achievement of concrete negotiating results and to further stabilise bilateral economic and trade relations.
