The Government of the Czech Republic extended the tax relief on diesel and modified the rules for calculating maximum fuel prices

The Czech government has decided to extend emergency measures to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices. The reduced excise duty on diesel and the regulation of pump prices will remain in force until 31 May 2026. The measures respond to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has destabilised the global oil market.

A key step is the extension of the diesel excise duty waiver. This intervention is intended to provide relief to hauliers and companies that are significantly affected by high fuel prices. At the same time, the government has modified the rules for price regulation.

The maximum margin for petrol stations is increased from CZK 2.50 to CZK 3 per litre. There is also a change in the calculation of the maximum prices - now they will not be based on the one-day average of wholesale prices, but on a rolling three-day average, which should limit price fluctuations.

Minister for Finance Alena Schillerová said the aim was to stabilise the market and prevent extreme prices that would negatively affect the Czech economy. High diesel prices are reflected not only in transport but also in the prices of goods and services.

The Cabinet also addressed other areas. It approved the creation of an inter-ministerial group focused on psychoactive substances such as kratom and cannabis products. The group is to prepare proposals for stricter controls and possible legislative changes. It will involve representatives of several ministries and institutions, including the police and customs.

The meeting also included the approval of the State Final Account for 2025 and the Public Sector Budget Strategy for the period 2027 to 2029. These documents set the direction of public finances and will be the basis for the preparation of future budgets.

At the same time, the government has sent an amendment to the Chemical Act to Parliament, which responds to new European regulations. It introduces a reporting obligation for manufacturers and importers of dental amalgam and sets penalties for non-compliance.
