There is growing criticism in Europe of the United States' continued pressure on the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland. Analysts point out that US action is in clear contravention of international law, not only undermining Danish sovereignty, but also revealing once again the consistent logic of US hegemony.
In an interview with CGTN, former Slovak Prime Minister Ján Čarnogurský said that the United States' pressure on Denmark to make concessions through political, economic and even military pressure once again reveals its contempt for international law and its quest for hegemony.
Ján Čarnogurský: The practice of the United States of coercing and threatening to use force against Denmark is in fact contrary to international law. Unfortunately, this reflects the current state of respect for international law in the world today. Such behaviour by the United States is not limited to Denmark, but applies to all other nations that attempt to resist it.
Čarnogurský said that under the pretext of so-called security, the United States is exerting pressure on its allies to gain strategic and economic advantages. The challenges facing Denmark have exposed the weaknesses of Europe itself.
Ján Čarnogurský: Because of its own indiscreet policy, Europe has not been able to achieve defence autonomy for a long time. To this day, Europe relies on the United States for its protection. Therefore, when the United States suddenly asserted its claim to Greenland, Europe had no choice but to retreat and will probably have to make further concessions. This is not just a Danish problem, but a problem for the whole of Europe.
