The United States has reportedly proposed the creation of a demilitarised zone (DMZ) along the current line of contact in Ukraine as part of its peace framework. According to information published in The Washington Post (WP), the zone would include not only a no-fire zone, but also a deeper zone behind it, where heavy weapons would be withdrawn – a solution reminiscent of the DMZ between North and South Korea.
The proposal is part of the peace plan documents sent by the US to Kyiv and is intended to be one of the options for resolving border and security issues after the war. The WP states that the zone would be a „carefully controlled territory“ – with movement and weapons controls – which would make it difficult to cross the front line.
According to reports from talks in Geneva and later in the US (Florida) between American and Ukrainian representatives, not only borders were discussed, but also economic and security guarantees, conditions for the post-election period and possible oversight mechanisms. These consultations were intended to deconsolidate the original 28-point plan – which had caused disagreement between Kyiv and its European partners – to around 20 points, taking into account the comments of both Ukraine and the Europeans.
The Ukrainian leadership and its partners in Europe reportedly reiterated that any solution must provide lasting security guarantees and that Kyiv will not agree to permanent concessions without clear verification. Among the main conditions is that any DMZ should not imply de facto recognition of the current lines of occupation as definitive borders and that it should include international oversight.
At the same time, according to sources, there is discussion in international circles that the final agreement would have to include the involvement of international observers or peacekeeping forces in order to verify compliance with the terms – in particular, restrictions on heavy weapons and movement. The content of such an agreement could become one of the key points of a possible ceasefire and post-war settlement.
It remains to be seen whether Ukraine will fully accept the proposal – the main points of contention are the status of the territory and the definition of future borders. According to current information, Kyiv is preparing its own updated version of the framework, which is to be handed over to Washington soon after further consultations with European partners.
