In an interview with POLITICO, President Donald Trump sharply attacked European leaders, calling them „weak“ and Europe itself for „declining“ a continent that is unable to cope with migration or the Russian-Ukrainian war. At a time when Europe is discussing a possible end to the conflict, Trump refused to offer any reassurance, stating that „Russia is clearly in a stronger position than Ukraine.“.
In the interview, Trump also stated that he would support European politicians who share his vision, regardless of how Europeans react to this: „I would support it. I have supported people whom many Europeans dislike. I have supported Viktor Orbán.“ European governments are criticising the new US national security strategy, which promises „cultivating resistance“ towards the European status quo on migration issues.
Trump spoke about European cities with considerable sharpness. He described London and Paris as places „fragile under the burden of migration“ and warned that without changes „Some states will no longer be viable.“. He described Sadiq Khan as „disaster“ and added: „He is elected because so many people came. They are now voting for him.“
He took a hard line against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He claimed that he had presented him with a new draft peace plan: „It would be nice if he read it.“ He again called on Ukraine to hold new elections: „They haven't had elections for a long time... it's getting to the point where it's no longer a democracy.“
In Latin America, Trump did not rule out the deployment of American troops in Venezuela, as well as interventions in Mexico or Colombia: „Of course I will.“ He also admitted that he had pardoned former Honduran President Hernández on the recommendation of „very good people“.
He claimed that the economy had „A-plus-plus-plus-plus-plus“ and that „prices are falling“, even though the data shows three per cent inflation. He confirmed that he would ask the Fed chair candidate to support a rapid reduction in interest rates. He responded vaguely to the question of whether he would support a temporary extension of health insurance subsidies.
