This year's 14th edition of the Day of Architecture with the subtitle "Process of Transformation" will commemorate, among other things, the 100th anniversary of the death of the writer Franz Kafka, which will be one of the main programme lines of the festival. Until Thursday, 3 October, it will not only present buildings associated with this author or buildings related to literature, but will also invite visitors to places with a Kafkaesque atmosphere.
Other programme events will be dedicated to the anniversary and the work of the important late Baroque builder and architect František Maxmilián Kaňka (1674-1766), the author of the castles of Jemniště, Karlova Koruna and Loučeň or the Church of St. John of Nepomuk in Kutná Hora; Josef Fanta (1856-1954), architect of the Prague Central Station building or the current Ministry of Industry and Trade; Karel Hubacek (1924-2011), one of the most renowned Czechoslovak architects, author of the design of the TV transmitter and the hotel on Ještěd, and their collaborators.
Last year, the largest festival about architecture in the Czech Republic offered over 500 free events in more than 100 towns and villages across the Czech Republic and Slovakia and attracted 35,000 visitors. This year, from Friday 27 September to Thursday 3 October 2024, visitors can take part in a variety of architectural walks or excursions in the company of architects and experts on the subject, as well as other events. The events are organised in cooperation with local associations and architects. The programme also offers a series of lectures, cycle rides as well as theatre performances, concerts and workshops for children. A sister festival, Film and Architecture, is also running at the same time.
The Day of Architecture is organized by the Kruh association, which aims to connect the professional and lay public and commemorate the anniversaries of prominent personalities in the field of architecture. This year, for the first time, it will be combined with literature thanks to the anniversary of Franz Kafka. The festival programme is free of charge, for selected events prior reservation is required on the event website www.denarchitektury.cz, where more information will be published on an ongoing basis.
