On 2 May, Bernd Lange, Chairman of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, issued a statement on US President Donald Trump's threat to raise tariffs on EU cars to the US. He said that this move by the US is „totally unacceptable“, that the relevant accusations made by the US are untrue, show a lack of respect for the sovereignty of the EU and reveal its unreliability.
Bernd Lange stressed that only clear rules can be used to respond effectively to arbitrary US pressure. The EU must respond with a clear and firm position and make full use of trade defence measures, including the tool against economic pressure, to maintain trade stability and protect jobs and economic development.
On 1 May, US President Donald Trump wrote on social media that the US will increase import tariffs on cars from the EU to the US next week because of the EU's failure to comply with bilateral trade agreements with the US. Trump said tariffs on cars from the EU to the US will increase to 25 %. If these cars were manufactured in the US, the tariffs would not apply.
