Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas, on June 22, 1936. From a young age, he was a great admirer of one of the classics of the American country music genre, Hank Williams. He came from a military family, his father being a Major General in the USAF. While at university, he played sports and wrote his first short stories and novels. He also wrote his first songs at that time. While studying in Oxford, England, he wrote two novels and unsuccessfully attempted a career as a rock and roll singer under the pseudonym Kris Carson. However, he was not successful in music or literature there, and his novels were not liked by publishers on either side of the Atlantic.
In 1960 he abandoned all his studies, married and enlisted in the army, where he served as a helicopter pilot for five years. During his military service, he began performing in army clubs at NATO military bases and busily composed more songs. In 1965, he met Johnny Cash. He left a secure position as an English professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He started all over again from scratch. He was a bar doorman, helicopter pilot for an oil company in the Gulf of Mexico. It wasn't until 1968 that he finally got his first professional contract. Over the next few years, he became a respected and admired star of American country music.
He later became a successful film actor. Among the most famous films he starred in are. Convoy (1978) or the action series about a vampire hunter starring Wesley Snipes Blade (1998), Blade II (2002) and Blade: Trinity (2005). Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). Kris Kristofferson has been married three times and has eight children.
He composed and sang his best-known hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1970s, he performed with his second wife, Rita Coolidge. From 1985-1995 he was a member of the supergroup The Highwaymen, along with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson has released dozens of albums and a long string of singles, and has won numerous awards. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2006, he received the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
