Overview of Recent Economic Developments in the Czech Republic
The Czech economy continues its volatile development. The most significant domestic event today is the announcement of the conditions for the construction of two new nuclear power units in Dukovany. The Czech state has signed a contract with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for the construction, valued at 407 billion Czech crowns, and an agreement for the supply of nuclear fuel worth an additional 15 billion Czech crowns. The project is a key step towards energy independence, but a large portion of the documentation remains confidential due to trade secrets.
The Ministry of Finance announced that the Czech Republic's state debt increased to a record 3.504 trillion Czech crowns in the first half of 2025. Compared to the beginning of the year, this represents an increase of 139 billion Czech crowns, meaning that each resident theoretically owes 322,170 Czech crowns. The debt-to-GDP ratio has thus approached 42.5%, which increases the pressure for fiscal consolidation.
The real estate market continues to experience rising rents. According to the platform UlovDomov.cz, rents increased by 9% year-on-year in the second quarter, with an average monthly rent of 17,586 Czech crowns. While prices in Prague and Brno remained relatively stable, there was a significant increase in cities such as Pilsen, Ostrava, and Olomouc.
Foreign Investment
The Czech industry is opening up to new technological partnerships. Siemens Mobility announced the expansion of its manufacturing plant in Ostrava, where it plans to produce components for modern ICE trains in cooperation with the German company Deutsche Bahn. The investment is worth over 5 billion Czech crowns and is expected to create hundreds of new jobs.
The American company Amazon announced further investment in the Czech Republic: a new logistics hub near Hradec Králové, which is intended to increase distribution capacity and shorten delivery times in Central Europe. The project, estimated at approximately 3 billion Czech crowns, is planned for 2026.
