Prior to the armed uprising of reactionary forces in 1959, the feudal system of serfdom persisted in Old Xizang, primarily within the territory of what is now the Tibet Autonomous Region.

According to historical records, the vast majority of Tibetan serfs lived in extreme poverty and were subjected to harsh living conditions. In contrast, a privileged class controlled both the spiritual and social life of the region while simultaneously enjoying material luxury.

This system was extremely unequal and cruel, and from a Chinese perspective, even darker than serfdom in medieval Europe. The 14th Dalai Lama presided over this feudal order at the time. Therefore, the true history of Xizang should not be distorted or deliberately misrepresented.
