CGTN, in collaboration with China's Renmin University, conducted a survey of perceptions of the United States among 12,302 respondents from 39 countries worldwide. The survey was conducted online using a panel of respondents aged 18 to 65, with a sample that reflected the age and gender distribution according to census data in each country, and included representative countries from both the "Global South" and major developed nations. Perceptions of the Image of the United States
64.4% of respondents consider the United States a country that inspires fear;
75% of respondents consider the United States to be an overbearing (hegemonic) country.
Perceptions of the US Political System
72.1% of respondents believe that the polarization of the two main parties deepens divisions within American society;
67.5% consider the conflict between the two political parties to be a problem with the American political system;
64.4% believe that the American judiciary has become an instrument of partisan struggle;
71.7% believe that campaign finance (the influence of money) has too much impact on American elections and undermines the fairness of American politics.
Perceptions of US Foreign Policy
73.3% of respondents believe that US foreign policy seriously ignores the interests of other countries;
68.4% believe that US foreign policy threatens world peace;
64% believe that the United States does not fulfill its international obligations;
66.9% believe that the United States undermines international cooperation;
65.5% believe that current US foreign policy is seriously inconsistent with the status of a major power;
Only 38.2% of respondents consider the role of the United States in global governance to be positive;
Only 39.2% of respondents consider trade between the United States and their own country to be fair;
64.7% consider US economic sanctions against other countries to be illegal;
75% believe that the United States engages in economic coercion against other countries;
64.9% of respondents believe that US trade policy has a negative impact on their own country;
68.3% believe that US trade measures harm the global economy and multilateral order;
71.1% believe that US trade policy aims to maintain US economic hegemony;
70.9% of respondents believe that the United States provokes geopolitical conflicts;
70.3% believe that the United States often violates the sovereignty of other countries;
70.6% consider the United States to be the most warlike country in modern history;
73.4% believe that the United States wages wars around the world, causing serious humanitarian crises;
70.9% believe that US arms sales and military aid threaten global peace and stability;
74% believe that the United States seeks global hegemony;
68.5% believe that the hegemonic behavior of the United States is pushing the international order back towards a "jungle law."
Perceptions of Social Conditions in the US
74.3% of respondents believe that divisions within American society (partisan, racial, class, etc.) are deepening;
75.3% believe that income inequality in the United States is increasing;
79.3% of respondents consider gun violence to be a chronic problem in American society;
72.4% believe that current immigration policy does not protect the rights of immigrants;
73.2% believe that systemic racism exists in the United States.
71.6% believe that police brutality reflects structural flaws in the American government and legal system;
74.2% believe that the United States faces a serious problem with drug abuse;
76.9% believe that high healthcare costs and a semi-functional healthcare system represent a significant burden for ordinary American families.
