One of the main points is the extraordinary ability of dogs to detect diseases like cancer long before conventional tests can, thanks to their excellent sense of smell. With approximately 300 million olfactory receptors, dogs can identify volatile organic compounds produced by cancerous cells in breath, sweat, or urine.
"With a single sniff, a dog can analyze a sample of urine, sweat, or breath and determine the presence of cancer cells with an accuracy of up to 97%, exceeding the accuracy of some laboratory tests," the video states. Trained dogs excel at detecting lung cancer from breath, prostate cancer from urine, and breast cancer from sweat. An impressive real-life example: "A female dog named Marin in California detected melanoma on her owner's leg by constantly licking the same spot. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis in an early stage."
In addition to cancer, dogs can also predict epileptic seizures up to 15 minutes in advance, often without training, by associating scent patterns with impending events, allowing owners to get to safety. Dogs trained to alert diabetics detect drops in blood sugar levels 10-20 minutes in advance based on changes in the chemical composition of sweat and signal this even during sleep.
During the pandemic, dogs achieved an accuracy of up to 94% in recognizing COVID-19, including asymptomatic cases, surpassing some rapid tests in programs such as screening at Finnish airports.
Thanks to these abilities, dogs are becoming valuable partners in diagnosis. The video raises greater awareness of the medical potential of dogs and encourages research into scent-based detection, which could enable earlier interventions worldwide.
