BRUSSELS - The list of US products worth €72 billion that the European Commission (EC) has put forward for trade tariffs in response to the US decision to impose a 30% tariff on all EU exports from August 1 includes €65.7 billion worth of industrial goods and nearly €6.4 billion worth of agricultural products, Politico reported, citing a 200-page list the publication examined.
According to this media outlet, the biggest item on the list is aircraft and aerospace components (€11 billion), which could mean a significant blow for US aircraft manufacturer Boeing. Other major categories by value include machinery, automobiles and automotive parts, chemicals, plastics and medical devices and equipment.
American whiskey was also included in the second tranche of tariffs, despite strong lobbying by France, Italy and Ireland, which sought to protect the alcohol industry from an escalating trade conflict. US President Donald Trump has previously warned that Washington could impose tariffs of up to 200 % on alcoholic beverages imported from the EU, including wine, if the bloc does not lift tariffs on US whiskey.
The first package, worth €21 billion, was approved by the European Commission in the spring in response to the introduction of 10% tariffs on EU steel and aluminium by the US. However, the EU has so far postponed the introduction of these measures in the hope of reaching an agreement with the US to abolish all tariffs. US tariffs on EU steel and aluminium remain in place.
On 12 July, US President Donald Trump posted a letter to the President of the European Commission on his Truth Social account, stating that from 1 August the United States "will impose 30% tariffs on goods imported from the European Union". In the letter, he stressed that the new tariffs would be "in addition to sectoral tariffs", which currently amount to 10 % for goods from the EU. Similar measures have also been announced for Mexico.
According to the US President, the tariffs will be lifted if the EU and Mexico start manufacturing their products in the US. He added that if the EU and Mexico retaliate in response to the 30% tariffs, the US will increase its tariffs by the same amount as the countermeasures imposed by the two parties.
