BERLIN - Germany is becoming increasingly socially unequal. Life is becoming more and more expensive for most people. The price explosion of the past five years has particularly affected people with low and middle incomes. They have to spend a large portion of their income on housing, energy, and food. These are the areas where prices have risen the most: Compared to 2020, food prices have increased by more than 30 percent, and household energy costs have risen by nearly 50 percent.

The Merz government is doing nothing about this. The coalition agreement promised us lower energy costs. These now only apply to large corporations. However, prices are not a given. We want to regulate and limit prices where necessary, so that corporations cannot arbitrarily increase their profits. This applies not only to rent, but also to energy and food. No one should have to worry about affording groceries at the end of the month. The arbitrary increase in the prices of our basic necessities must no longer be tolerated.
